PCLinuxOS

What do you think when you hear the word Linux? Do you think some “elite” basement dweller living in there mothers home? Do you think “I never used it before….why should I use it now”…well in a way you are using it right now…the web page is hosted on a Linux box…so in a sense you are using Linux :) This is not an article about how cool, easy or awesome Linux..I just want to share one of my personal favorites distros (versions) with you.

Today I’m gonna briefly talk about a distro call PCLinuxOS Why is this one of my personal favs? Well for me it is one of the most user friendly versions, I think if you take a look at it ,mess around a bit with it you will find that you can easily of the basic normal everyday tasks that you do on a windows based PC. Will you be playing the newest games on it? Well no…but you will be able to do anything else on it surf, email, video conference, burn CDs or DVDs, stream video from sites like Hulu honestly..any other thing you could think of that you can do on a windows PC you can do on PCLinuxOS .

  • For new users: PCLinuxOS (abbreviated pclos) is a Linux distribution (a free operating system) written with the new Linux user in mind. It is one of the most straightforward Linux versions to install and run. It includes all the essential software for everyday use.
  • For advanced users: PCLinuxOS is so complete and friendly, that it has become the primary operating system even of seasoned Linux users. For power users, PCLinuxOS is extremely easy to customize.
  • Distribution: PCLinuxOS is provided as a single installable “Live CD”. This lets you try it without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install it to your hard drive. What you were trying out will become what you boot into.

If you think that you would like to give it a try but are scared about installing it….don’t worry ..theres no need to install anything. The beautiful thing about Linux is that most of the dirsto dont need to be installed to be used, they can be ran from a “liveCD” or even just a thumbdrive. Try it first and install it later.

Essentials

As a guide: Any recent PC will be more than enough for running PCLinuxOS. Here is a basic checklist:

  • An IBM-compatible PC

  • 8 GB of free disk space (To install. to run the live CD you don’t need any)

  • 512 MB of memory (you can get by with 256)

  • a CD or DVD drive

  • a network card

  • a high speed internet connection (for new software and updates)

This is a great Linux distro. I have distro hopped and tried so many different variations ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, SUSE, Mandriva, Granular, Fedora, etc etc ) that I finally decided what Linux distro has been the best experience for me. I currently have been using PCLOS since the 2009 version and I have PCLOS installed as the only OS on my PC and I also have it installed on my laptop ( dual boot with Win XP, I keep Win XP because my work website login works only with IE ). The installation has always been easy and straight forward. I still use the KDE version 3.5, but am willing to try KDE 4 when the PCLOS team deem it stable. The PCLOS forum has been a very helpful place. Always get a helping hand there and friendly people too. I also installed PCLOS on my mother in law’s PC and she likes the stability, protection from viruses etc and that it works without crashing. If she can use it, anyone can. By the way, I don’t work for PCLOS nor am I anyway connected with them, except for a pleasant computing experience.

So true on every point..myself I have bounced from Debian,Mandrake,Ubuntu and PCLOS and countless others. While I don’t mind Ubuntu at all…it’s quick stable and has a great community I still find PCLOS is the most user friendly and is great for a first time user to check out and see what linux can be. Can’t say that its any type of a windows killer, but 99% of the time it can and will get the job done.

Must agree with the both of you, been using PCLos since big daddy(93) and i’ve found it to be the easiest Distro to use even for a technophobe like me,i nearly gave up on Linux after trying all the other top Distro’s at the time until i was encouraged to try PCLos,i’m now glad i did.
Thanks to PCLos and a FANTASTIC community.

  • Hello, I found this blog article while searching for help with JavaScript. I’ve recently switched browsers from Opera to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. Just recently I seem to have a problem with loading JavaScript. Every time I go on a website that requires Javascript, the page freezes and I get a “runtime error javascript.JSException: Unknown name”. I can’t seem to find out how to fix the problem. Any aid is very appreciated! Thanks
