Mechwarrior...a emotional kick to the nuts

Well… I have put off saying anything about this simply because … as a known Mechwarrior addict..this last year just seems like an emotional kick to the balls. First I was thrilled to tears over the Mechwarrior: Living Legends total mod for crysis..Whao Hey Right On .. a freebie mob for built on the Crysis engine..oh hey..there saying a demo is coming out int the next few weeks..oh wait…they said that last year. Ok I get it…no time frame…maybe the “free” mod was a overstatement..no issues.. I would pay for it..if it would ever come out..

Next ….HOLY#@&^ LOOK AT THAT!!!!!!! IGN has a trailer for a up coming Smith and Tinker / Piranha Games release of MechWarrior 5 (working title..or not). Holyhell..I am calling people I’m sending emails and PM’s…OMFG go check this out I’m screaming at them…there’s a sonic boom heard around the world as thousands of nipples snap to attention. Suddenly the a few hundred 40somthings out there bouncing around like kids on Christmas morning..OMG can this be real!! YES look at it OMG FINALLY!!!

Now for the big kick to the nuts..unless you have been living under a rock, not that there is anything wrong with that, you have heard that Harmony Gold the media company that holds rights to the Robotech / Macross universe in the US is up to there same crap again, falling back on a old 1996 copy-write infringement settlement. Ok ..fine.ya back then Mechwarrior / BattleTech pretty much lifted some mechs straight from Robotech / Macross..fine..End result? BattleTech / Mechwarrior ceased using mech designs lifted from Macross / Robotech and instead employed only mechs they designed themselves. Fair enough.

Now back to Mechwarrior 5 it seems that the Mechwarrior Warhammer shown in the trailer looks a little to much like a Macross Tomahawk. Well I guess it has two legs..and two arms..maybe that what has Harmony’s panties in a bunch, I don’t know.. I will admit..similar..yes..inspired by..sure..same mech..I think not. Still no news if Harmony wants there to be a re-edit to the game or if there just trying to nuke the whole project.

Nonetheless Mechwarrior fans prepair for another year without a new release of anything involving Mechwarrior….

The real problem with Harmony Gold is they pretty much just take what Big West makes (ie Macross) and rebrand it as a Robotech product, and as I understand even Macross fans think they're horrendous and need to die for the desecration of their beloved story.

Regardless of how lame and pathetic Harmony Gold is as an 'intellectual property owner'… you do have a point, and I try to make the same one often enough, that the Warhammer as it appears in the 'reboot' trailer really doesn't look nearly enough like the Macross Tomahawk, otherwise known as an Excaliber (not Excalibur, which would be the right spelling for the sword name) in Robotech.

Seriously, doing something like this is just invariably going to screw them back anyway- if they were smart, they'd show fans of the mecha genre in general that they aren't assholes and not raise such a stink. As it is, it's just making them even more shunned.
