Will Microsoft’s retail store open in time for the Windows 7 Release?

Looks like Microsoft is pushing hard to have there first retail store opened by the release date of Windows 7. This will be there first step into a retail market currently dominated by Apple,but will they make it in time? Although they haven’t officially offered up a opening date, there store in Scottsdale,Arizona seems like it is just needing some finishing touches and to be filled with product.

When asked Chief executive Steve Ballmer teased reporters with an imminent opening on Friday, but also would not commit to a date.

“We’ll open a couple of stores, try to improve, open a couple more stores,” Ballmer said at a public appearance in downtown Boston.

“It’s very important for us to have a direct connection with the user,” said Ballmer, talking about the planned stores, which he said will be important for “showing the customer what you really can do.”

Windows 7 VS Snow Leopard

Now that Windows 7 is officially released next week..we find ourselves wondering how its gonna stack up against Snow Leopard. Inherently there are issues in any type of a head-to-head benchmarking….like Apple not allowing official installs of OS X to PC’s. Then theirs is just personally choice..what does the end want. That said..we have found what we believe is the closest we can come to a fair head-to-head test.

CNet’s Dong Ngo took a late-2008 model 15-inch MacBook Pro and used it to compare Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and Windows 7 64-bit RTM (with native drivers from Boot Camp 3.0). The machine was equipped with a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and a 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT video card – all fairly standard in the average laptop.

Ngo found that Snow Leopard outperformed Windows 7 in nearly all areas except for graphics (likely due to better drivers from Nvidia). Some results are:

- Snow Leopard booted and shut down around six seconds faster than Windows 7.

- Snow Leopard took 149.9 seconds to convert 17 songs from MP3 to the AAC format. Windows needed 12 seconds more for the same job.

- Snow Leopard took 444.3 seconds vs. Windows 7’s 723 seconds to convert a movie file from the MP4 format into the iPod format while having iTunes converting songs in the background the job (versions of QuickTime were different, however).

- In a battery test, Windows 7 lasted 78 minutes, while Snow Leopard managed to stay on for 111 minutes.

- Windows 7’s Cinebench R10 score was 5,777 vs. 5,437 for the OS X.

- Windows 7 in Call of Duty 4 scored 26.3 frames per second while Snow Leopard got only 21.2 fps.

Interesting..but not conclusive ……

Why are you not using OpenOffice?

Once again I have heard this…”hang on..I cant find my MS office key”..It always make me wonder..why would you need a key?..heck..why would you need a MS office product? Lets get one thing straight..chances are that you don’t NEED MS office.

Unless you have been living under a rock, not that there’s anything wrong with that, you should have at lest heard of OpenOffice.org, if you haven’t then its time for you to wake up. Open Office is the leading open-source office suite and is capable of doing anything that a typical home and small office user would need/expect. Here is some info taken directly from the open office site and you tell me if you think it would work for you needs.

RAWR Mac OS X Snow Leopard eating user accounts

Along with the news of compatibility issues and admission that yes Macs are indeed vulnerability to malware, looks like Apple has stepped it up a bit and shipped there latest OS X with a bug that can delete all your files from your user account. Reports are pouring in that if you log in with a guest account and the computer hangs it can eat everything connected with your user account.

Hmm…”they just work” huh?

What do you think when you hear the word Linux? Do you think some “elite” basement dweller living in there mothers home? Do you think “I never used it before….why should I use it now”…well in a way you are using it right now…the web page is hosted on a Linux box…so in a sense you are using Linux This is not an article about how cool,easy or awesome Linux..I just want to share one of my personal favorites distros (versions) with you.

Today I’m gonna briefly talk about a distro call PCLinuxOS Why is this one of my personal favs? Well for me it is one of the most user friendly versions, I think if you take a look at it ,mess around a bit with it you will find that you can easily of the basic normal everyday tasks that you do on a windows based PC. Will you be playing the newest games on it? Well no…but you will be able to do anything else on it surf,email,video conference, burn CDs or DVDs, stream video from sites like Hulu honestly..any other thing you could think of that you can do on a windows PC you can do on PCLinuxOS .

For new users: PCLinuxOS (abbreviated pclos) is a Linux distribution (a free operating system) written with the new Linux user in mind. It is one of the most straightforward Linux versions to install and run. It includes all the essential software for everyday use.

For advanced users: PCLinuxOS is so complete and friendly, that it has become the primary operating system even of seasoned Linux users. For power users, PCLinuxOS is extremely easy to customize.

Distribution: PCLinuxOS is provided as a single installable “Live CD”. This lets you try it without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install it to your hard drive. What you were trying out will become what you boot into.

If you think that you would like to give it a try but are scared about installing it….don’t worry ..theres no need to install anything. The beautiful thing about Linux is that most of the dirsto dont need to be installed to be used, they can be ran from a “liveCD” or even just a thumbdrive. Try it first and install it later.

Essentials

As a guide: Any recent PC will be more than enough for running PCLinuxOS. Here is a basic checklist:

An IBM-compatible PC
8 GB of free disk space (To install. to run the live CD you don’t need any)
512 MB of memory (you can get by with 256)
a CD or DVD drive
a network card
a high speed internet connection (for new software and updates)
